CREATIVE RESIDENCIES
|Funded|

4 x residencies x 2 weeks each @ $6000 per residency
S1 Creative Residencies supports Queensland Dancers from a grass roots level.

Artists need space to make and create. In responding to the demand to test and seed ideas, to ensure viability – socially, culturally and artistically, is incredibly important for innovative practice. To try, and to potentially fail, adjust, re-consider and re-make is vital to innovation. This is the future of robust dance making.

Studio1  Creative Residencies, as part of Studio1’s The Workroom program, will provide 4 dance or physical theatre artists, or collectives, 2 weeks of space each with a cash contribution of $6000 per project. These residencies will specifically focus on exploration and process. They allow space and time for artists to turn initial ideas into structure, methodology and aesthetic palette, in readiness for larger opportunities, EOI’s, funding bids and grant applications.

This program champions adaptability, flexibility and rigorous practice.

No formal outcomes, showings or sharings are required with the residency, rather the residency is to focus on pure creative discovery.

Studio1 encourages applications from First Nations Artists and Culturally and Linguistically diverse artists. Studio1 is a safe space and for Queer communities.

THE SANDPIT
|Curated and Facilitated by Jag Popham|

Artist Communities and free to participate

Interactive Play and Artfrom Development

The Sandpit is a cross art-form, experimental series of afternoon creative-play sessions . It holds space for artists to hone their tools in a condensed creative process, encouraging them to lean into pressure and optimise decision making. Artists choose how they want to engage, signing up either as a dancer/movement artist, or choreographer/creator. Our curator, Jag Popham, will lead participants through a class and allocate groups, followed by a few hours to create a piece of art based upon the given provocation, before returning and sharing what has been made. Each edition will include artists from a different medium - musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, theatre-makers and more!

Jag Popham our Sandpit Curator share’s his vision and values for this process driven platform:

“At the core of the project is a philosophy of collaboration, where all ideas are welcomed and nurtured to grow collectively. Participants are encouraged to approach creation as a sacred act, with a commitment to serving the work, rather than their own egos.

Each iteration of Sandpit revolves around a curated theme, serving as a prompt to spark the imaginations of participating artists. But while the themes may guide the artists, there are no limitations or expectations as to where their curiosity may take them.

Sandpit is not about proving oneself; it's about improving as an artist. Join us in this exciting journey of exploration and creation!

Axiom: "Failure is freedom" - Charles Bukowski”

EXCHANGE
|Curated by Liesel Zink|

Artist Communities and free to participate

Work-in-progress sharings and audience feedback.

Exchange Afternoons are twice yearly evening events that provide a platform for the SEQ arts community to gather, engage in critical discourse and share/observe local ideas-in-progress. Curated by a guest Choreographer, each evening will host three dance/physical theatre artists to, in whatever way feels relevant to them, share artistic ideas they are currently researching. The broader community is invited to watch and participate in a facilitated feedback session that encourages critical discourse between viewers as well as providing considered feedback for the involved artists. Exchange evenings are designed to bring together our diverse community of dance artists (from emerging to established) promoting peer-to-peer learning, fostering new relationships and invaluable community building.

A word from Liesel Link about the afternoon…

“I want Studio1’s Exchange to be an opportunity for artists to gather in Brisbane; a space to share ideas and research while having a refreshment and catching up with friends in our arts community. The first exchange will invite three independent artists who all have elements of audience engagement and participation in their work.”

Outcomes:

  • Building a community of practitioners

  • Developing rigorous process

  • Sharing research and tools for investigation
